Decaf – love it or hate it?

Decaf coffee – It seems to cause a large amount of controversy within coffee circles.
Within our business customer base, less than fifty percent buy our decaf as well as our main blend.
The question is, why?
Are they buying it elsewhere? Are they just not giving it to their customers as an option? Do they not get requests for it?
Why should I offer a decaf option?
There are many reasons, but we want to explain why we think you should put as much effort into what you offer as a decaf option as you do your general coffee offering. One in five coffee drinkers now regularly opt for decaf, according to a report by Mintel which means if you’re not offering decaf as an option you are isolating a whole group of potential customers.
Some people can’t drink caffeine for health or even mental health reasons. Those who have given up caffeine – either at certain times of the day, or altogether, do so due to issues with insomnia, nervousness, palpitations, stomach issues and restlessness, as well as withdrawal symptoms like headaches and anxiety.
I thought coffee was meant to have health benefits?
The health benefits of decaf coffee aren’t dissimilar to regular coffee. Including antioxidants and a reduced risk of serious disease, just without the side effects. You will find you can get to sleep a little easier as it’s not stimulating your nervous system in the same way.
Those who have made the switch have generally done so because they enjoy the taste of coffee over the effects of it.
James Hoffman has referenced this in a video he has brought out about decaf coffee processing. He argues that Decaf drinkers are the “purest” of coffee drinkers as they are only drinking it for the taste.
We know that not a lot of effort is put into decaf in many cases, which is why at Mini & Mighty we made sure our decaf was created with as much care and attention as the rest of our blends.
Can you recommend a good decaf coffee?
So our question to you isn’t whether you serve decaf or not, but why aren’t you serving our decaf?
Nothing to Declare is a 100% Arabica single origin coffee and is packed full of flavour notes you wouldn’t expect to find in a coffee at this price.
Rich peanut and chocolate notes, medium body, low acidity and just a well rounded flavour!
As well as selling it on our website, and in a few retail stores, we also sell a lot to our cafe and coffee shop customers.
Unlike the caffeinated coffee, we don’t sell it in the 1kg bags, and this is to create less waste. Our decaf comes in bags of 227g which means as you are unlikely to go through decaf as quickly as your normal coffee, then you aren’t storing too many extra beans, and can order four small packs (or more) at a time so that they stay fresh as long as possible.
When sealed and gas flushed, all our coffee has a 12 month shelf life.
We also offer beans, omni-ground and espresso-ground as options because not every cafe or coffee shop will have a second grinder for decaf, so our espresso ground is pre-ground to the coarseness needed in an espresso machine.
